School of Information Purchasing Recommendations

Greetings School of Information students! Here are the computing configurations recommended by your school:

(Please note: there is no obligation to purchase hardware/software from the Showcase; links to products are provided simply as a courtesy.)

Windows Desktop/Notebook

• Dual core (Core Duo) processor
• Video Card with 128MB memory minimum
• 1GB RAM Minimum (2 GB minimum for Vista)
• 80GB Hard Drive
• 10/100 Ethernet
• 802.11g wireless (for notebooks)
• DVD player or DVD+/-RW drive
• Windows XP PRO SP2 or Windows Vista Ultimate

Macintosh Intel Core 2 Duo (Minimum) Desktop or Notebook

• 1GB RAM (2GB Recommended)
• 80GB Hard drive
• CD writer/DVD-ROM drive
• Mac OS X 10.5 (or newer)
• AppleCare (at least one year)

Other Items Recommended
(but not included with standard packages):

• Microsoft Office (for Mac or Windows)
• USB key drive
• Printer
• McAfee VirusScan (available for free to U-M Faculty/Staff/Students at the VirusBusters website)

Note that the SI DIAD computer lab computers do not include floppy drives. Students are able to save files to a file server, to USB key drives, or burn them to CDs.
