Warranty Information

We bundle three-year (or occasionally four-year) warranties with our computers. The warranty does add to the purchase price, but repairs are expensive, and we strongly advocate that a good warranty pays for itself (sometimes several times over) over the course of time.

Warranty terms are set by the manufacturer (Apple, Dell, etc.) and you will deal directly with them for repairs and claims. Not all warranties are equal (for example, some cover accidental damage and some do not) so know exactly what you are buying when you make your purchase.

We operate an authorized repair center for Apple and Dell computers.

Apple Warranties

When you buy an Apple computer with 3-Year AppleCare from us, you are auto-enrolled for the warranty. Check the status of your warranty using Apple's Online Service Assistant. (Note: It may take up to four weeks from time of purchase for the warranty coverage to appear on the website.)

If the expiration date is not correct, follow the links to update the warranty information or contact Support for Education at 1-800-800-2775. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when the process is completed.

The Apple warranty is associated with the computer's serial number. Any authorized Apple repair center (international coverage) should have access to your warranty history.

Dell Warranties

When you buy a Dell computer that includes a multiple-year warranty from us, you are auto-enrolled for the warranty; however, U-M is still technically the owner of the computer until after you submit a Transfer of Ownership form. You may need to wait five or more business days after submitting the form for warranty information to be updated online. If the information is not corrected in that time, contact Dell Technical Support at 1-866-243-9297 or via realtime chat. You can check the status of your warranty on Dell's Support page.

HP Warranties

HP computers sold at the Computer Showcase include a multiple-year warranty; however, your HP laptop initially has only a 1-year warranty and is registered to the Computer Showcase. To have the warranty transferred to your name and activate the 3-year HP Care Pack, complete the online HP registration and activation form. (Need help with the process?)

Upon completion of the HP Care Pack registration process, you will receive a confirmation e-mail** verifying that your HP Care Pack was successfully registered. Please retain a copy of this confirmation e-mail; you will need its information if you have to invoke your warranty.

**Important Note: If you do not receive a message, it is possible that your e-mail security settings (SPAM filtering) are preventing HP messages from being delivered to your inbox. Please check for these messages in another folder such as junk, bulk, unknown or trash.

To check the expiration date of your HP warranty, go to HP's Support page.
